Factors Affecting Plastic Raw Material Prices

Why do PP and PE prices keep changing? How do crude oil, exchange rates, supply-demand balance and maintenance shutdowns affect price — and why you won't see a fixed price on the site.

Why don't we publish prices on the site?

Polyolefin prices are data tied to international petrochemical markets that can change daily/weekly. Producers, including Petkim, do not publish a fixed, publicly available price list — pricing is set on a quote basis according to quantity, delivery terms and the current market.

For this reason, instead of showing a fixed price on the site, we quickly send you a quote that reflects the current market and your specific quantity via WhatsApp or the contact form.

Main factors affecting price

Crude oil and naphtha prices: PP and PE sit at the start of the petrochemical value chain, based on propylene/ethylene monomers derived from crude oil (via naphtha) or natural gas — these input costs are directly related to movements in global energy markets.

Exchange rate: since raw material is generally priced internationally in USD, fluctuations in the TRY/USD rate directly affect domestic cost — this is especially pronounced for imported equivalents.

Supply-demand balance: new production capacity coming online, seasonal demand (e.g. the agricultural film season) or global logistics disruptions affect the supply-demand balance and, in turn, price.

Planned/unplanned maintenance shutdowns: maintenance outages at refineries or petrochemical plants can cause temporary supply tightening and price pressure.

Customs duty and freight: for imported material, customs duty rates and international freight (sea shipping) costs are a significant component of the domestic delivered price.

The gap between the domestic producer's (Petkim) contract/list price and the spot import price: the two sources are priced according to different dynamics, so a price difference between sources for the same grade is common.

What this means for you
