Plastic Raw Material Packaging and Proper Storage Conditions

Bags, pallets, big-bags — what packaging does plastic pellet arrive in, and how should it be stored after delivery? The basic rules for preventing quality loss before processing.

Standard packaging units

Polyolefin pellets are most commonly delivered in the sector in 25 kg polypropylene bags, palletized so that 60 bags = 1,500 kg. For some grades, large bags with a capacity of 900-1,000 kg (big-bag/jumbo bag) can also be used — this varies by grade and order quantity.

What to watch out for during storage

Keep away from direct sunlight: even in stabilized formulations, prolonged exposure of polyolefins to UV light can cause degradation of color and mechanical properties over time. Storage in an enclosed, shaded area is recommended.

Avoid extreme temperatures: high temperature and pressure (for example, very high pallet stacking or a hot storage environment) can cause the pellets inside the bag to stick together (blocking). A cool, well-ventilated environment is ideal.

Keep in original packaging: this provides the best protection against dust, moisture and foreign-material contamination until the bag is opened.

Watch the stacking limit: excessive loading on top of a pallet can cause deformation and pellet compression in the lower-layer bags; do not exceed the stacking height recommended by your supplier.

Apply the FIFO (first in, first out) principle: consuming older batches first, rather than letting stock wait indefinitely, helps maintain batch (lot) consistency.

An important distinction to know about moisture

Polyolefins such as PP, AYPE, YYPE and LLDPE are not hygroscopic — meaning that, unlike engineering plastics such as nylon (PA), they do not significantly absorb moisture from the air. For this reason a drying oven is generally not needed before processing.

Even so, surface condensation (for example during a sudden transition from a cold warehouse to a hot production environment) or damaged/open packaging can cause surface moisture/contamination — this can lead to visual defects, particularly in sensitive applications such as clear film. Keeping the packaging closed until the moment of processing prevents this risk.
