The scale of the problem

According to a frequently cited academic study (Jambeck et al., 2015), it is estimated that plastic waste enters the oceans from coastal regions on the order of millions of tons per year. Such estimates can vary between sources depending on measurement method and assumptions; it is more accurate to treat them as an order of magnitude rather than a single exact figure.

How does plastic reach the oceans?

Most ocean plastic pollution does not come from waste directly dumped into the sea, but from land-based waste carried to the sea via rivers and inadequate waste-management infrastructure. Coastal regions with insufficient collection/recycling infrastructure are shown to account for a disproportionate share of this flow.

What does the 'Great Pacific Garbage Patch' mean?

This term describes the area where the current systems (gyres) in the North Pacific Ocean accumulate plastic waste in a particular region. Contrary to popular perception, this area is not a continuous, solid 'island' — it is a scattered accumulation of waste at varying density, ranging from large pieces to microplastics (see the 'What Is Microplastic' article).

Solution approaches under discussion

Prevention at the source: regulations such as single-use plastic restrictions and extended producer responsibility aim to reduce waste before it reaches the sea (see the related articles).

Strengthening waste-management infrastructure: increasing collection/recycling capacity, especially in regions with inadequate collection systems, stands out as one of the measures experts emphasize most.

Cleanup technologies: initiatives such as The Ocean Cleanup develop mechanical systems to collect existing ocean plastic — but such solutions are generally viewed as complementing, rather than replacing, prevention at the source.
